All for the best
PRESIDENT Trump has reiterated his invitation for President Duterte to visit the United States in March. The American president first invited Mr. Duterte in April 2017, barely a year after Mr. Duterte was swept into power by a landslide victory in May 2016. But Mr. Duterte has decided to turn down Mr. Trump’s invite–the third one—in what could have gripped the nation in suspense if Mr. Duterte had agreed to accept it and become the specter of a possible collision between our President’s men and the US Senate.
Filipinos are aware of the recent US senate resolution that bars Philippine officials who had a hand in the jailing of Sen. Leila de Lima on a drug charge (non-bailable) from entering the US. Assuming Mr. Duterte finally heed Mr. Trump’s invite, will the US government insist that the Philippine entourage should not include “people responsible for De Lima’s imprisonment?” Or will Mr. Trump simply ignore the US Senate and allow Mr. Duterte’s delegation an unimpeded entry to America?
Alas, we will never know that but it is for the best that Mr. Duterte does not tempt a possible international embarrassment within the US government, with us in the center of it.
