Sto. Tomas police holds first anti-terrorism law seminar
STO. TOMAS–This town’s police force has been the first in the province to hold a seminar to educate community officials about the controversial Human Security Act of 2007, also known as the Anti-Terror Law.
Senior Inspector Ferdinand de Asis, the town police chief, conducted the seminar last Sunday, the day the law took effect, and was attended by all barangay officials, Sangguniang Bayan members led by Acting Mayor Dick Villar as well as the entire police force.
Senior Inspector Jonel Aurelio, Pangasinan police office legal officer, a lawyer and the main lecturer, explained what the law, contained under Republic Act 9372, is all about.
Villar, in an interview with The PUNCH, commended the initiative and said the seminar was both timely and important since it helped arrest people’s apprehension about the law.
He added that it is important that both the local government officials and the police know the limits of their power in the implementation of the law to avoid its abuse and commission of violations of human rights.—EVA
