Dagupan bangus price up due to Habagat
PRICE of Dagupan bangus has risen due to the rains brought forth by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).
Bangus price is sold now at PHP 135 – PHP 140, from PHP 100 per kilo last week.
City Agriculturist Emma Molina, in an interview, said the increase is not due to shortage of bangus, despite the fish kill, locally known as gataw, that occurredrecently.
The fish kill was a result of thermal shock, meaning that fish were not able to adjust with the sudden change in water temperature due to downpour.
“Yung pagkamatay ng ilang bangus dahil sa gataw, hindi po makakaapekto sa atin yon”, said Molina.
The price increase, however, is attributed to the effect of continuous rain that bangus, slowing down growth of their produce.
It takes four to five months for a bangus to grow from a fingerling to its adult size, but the rains make bangus grow beyond six months to fully develop.
“Apektado yung mga bangus growers kasi dagdag na panahon ang gugugulin para lumaki yung mga bangus natin”, Molina said.
Meanwhile, prices of Baguio vegetables in the city have also risen.
Eggplants and okra that cost P40 per kilogram last week, have doubled in price; while broccoli now costs P200, from P80. (Ahikam Pasion)
