Construction of 6-meter high embankment starts
PANTAL RIVER FLOOD MITIGATION
THE construction of a two-in-one project to address the problem of floods and need for service road has been started by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the southern bank of the Pantal River in Dagupan City.
Initiated by Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia, the project is an initial 320-meter long embankment, six-meters high from the level of the water and is four-meters wide that can accommodate tricycles and light vehicles.
De Venecia told newsmen this was one of the flood mitigation projects he and Mayor Belen Fernandez worked on to ease the flooding in Poblacion Oeste and Barangay I and the central business district of Dagupan.
De Venecia and DPWH District Engineer Edita Manuel, inspected the ongoing project on August 17.
Construction of the project started in May this year and is targeted to be finished in November this year barring any more weather disturbances, said Loreto de Leon, supervising engineer of BES Construction.
The work includes pile driving of pre-fabricated materials, raising the embankment by six meters from the water level and construction soon of a parapet wall, and concrete pavement.
De Leon said at four meters wide, it can accommodate tricycles bringing fish for sale at the city’s fish market so that they will no longer congest A.B. Fernandez Avenue West.
Rep. de Venecia said he will seek additional funding in the 2020 national budget for extension of the embankment by 250 meters more.
De Venecia noted that the first to be affected every time the Pantal River overflows its bank are the pupils and teachers of the Juan P. Guadiz Elementary School on A.B. Fernandez Avenue West. (Leonardo Micua)
