Villar to new graduates: Become entrepreneurs
RE-ELECTED Sen. Cynthia Villar urged graduates of Pangasinan State University to consider being entrepreneurs instead of seeking employment.
In her speech on June 25 at The Stadia, Villar challenged them to be ready for the challenges that await them because the unemployment rate remains high as she pointed out that seeking employment is not the only option available to them.
“In fact, I hope many of you should try to go into business,” she said because entrepreneurship is one of the effective ways to fight poverty.
She said she and her husband, former Senate President Manny Villar and their three children are all advocates of establishing businesses, even small ones.
She attributed her family’s success in business to their famous sipag at tiyaga mantra admitting that they also had humble beginnings. Like most businessmen, Villar said, they also started small.
Their real estate company started with a small gravel and sand company, she said.
When her husband resigned from his work in 1975, he availed himself of a bank loan of P70,000 and with their P20,000 savings, they bought two second-hand trucks to deliver sand and gravel for real estate developers.
Villar said it has been her advocacy to call for a new generation of entrepreneurs.
“And do not worry if you start small. It is better to start something small and make it big,” she said. “Remember, 95 percent of the businesses in our country are micro and small enterprises and they provide more than 65 percent of employment,” she added.
Villar said wealth and a high majority of jobs are created by small businesses and started by entrepreneurially-minded individuals or groups of individuals.
She advised the graduates to set their goals and work hard to realize them.
“Be change-makers. Keep in mind that you have the power to make a positive difference,” she said. (PhilStar Wire Service)
