SIXTY-five  fisherfolk from nine barangays of Dagupan each received a non-motorized fishing boat or ‘baloto’ with paddles from the city government as beneficiaries of the “Bottom-Up Budgeting” (BuB) program in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

The beneficiaries from barangays Mamalingling, Bonuan Binloc, Bonuan Gueset, Pugaro, Lomboy, Carael, Calmay, Salapingao and Lucao received their ‘balotos’ during a turnover ceremony in an area near the NBI on January 22.

The livelihood assistance will be a big boon to the fisherfolk as the boats will be used while maintaining their fishing structures as well as for transporting passengers to and from their villages.

Mayor Belen Fernandez, in her message, urged all beneficiaries to cooperate with the city in keeping the rivers clean and safe for navigation and appealed to them to also keep their equipment in good condition.

The city government continues to provide assistance to all marginal fisherfolk in the city from the revitalization of the city’s rivers to helping fishermen own and operate their respective fish cages. (Verdelle De Vera/CIO)
