SP Oks P4.4-B waste-to-energy project in Laoac
LINGAYEN–A P4.4-billion worth waste-to-energy facility is set to rise in Laoac town soon after the provincial board endorsed the proposed project of Green Atom Renewable Energy Corporation (GAREC) to undertake the town’s solid waste disposal project in other areas in this province using a state-of-the-art technology.
“It’s the first-of-its-kind in the country although the technology is already being used in other countries,” Laoac Mayor Silverio Alarcio Jr. said.
The facility will start processing 600 tons of garbage a day, although it can accommodate 1,000 tons daily and can generate cheap 12 megawatts electricity daily since that will be transmission costs and will be channeled directly to the Pangasinan Electric Cooperative, he said.
“It will be built at no cost to the local government but the town will get its share from the tipping fee of the garbage brought here as well as in taxes and other fees, he said. The host barangay and the province will also have their share,” the mayor added.
Alarcio said GAREC has partners from China, Japan and India and will use state-of-the-art technology being used overseas and expects the project to start construction since it already has an endorsement from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
He said the project will be a big boon in solving waste management problem of Pangasinan.
The facility will also have its hotel and restaurant to prove to all that it is safe from health hazards and is expected to boost investments in the town.
The project will be located in a five-hectare lot in Barangay Inmanduyan with the support of the barangay council and residents.
A committee hearing by the provincial board conducted on Nov. 23 last year and received the support of the Municipal Development Council of Manaoag.
The provincial board’s endorsement cited the employment that will be generated by the project and the solution to the waste disposal problems not only of the town but other towns of the province. (PhilStar Wire Service)
