Mon-mon Guico challenges Rep. Espino in 5th District

BINALONAN Mayor Ramon “Mon-mon” Guico III is challenging re-electionist Rep. Amado Espino Jr. for the congressional race in the Fifth District.

He said he didn’t have second thoughts fighting Espino “but what I considered is what I can do for the district” even as he added he doesn’t want to be overconfident and said he has to work harder to be elected.

“I’m happy that I’ve been around in different barangays visiting the leaders and the people who said they want a leader they can feel and see,” Guico said.

People are looking for change, looking for young leaders who would be able to solve basic problems, he added, stressing that he wants to be a “unifying leader” in the district and the province.

“It’s such a waste if it’s just highly political,” who said he decided to challenge Espino only last month as he described the state of governance in his district.

Guico, already on his third term as mayor, said he will replicate his battle cry “Binalonan Ang Galing” for his candidacy ”especially that I see that the 5th District’s potential for investments in the province”.

“It’s such a waste if you don’t capitalize on that,” he stressed citing his experience and his plans for the district while refusing to comment on his opponent’s performance except Espino’s constant absence in the district.

“But to be honest, in my nine years as a mayor, not even one fiesta he came to our town,” Guico said. Espino was a three-term governor before he became a congressman in 2016.

“Pangasinan is such a big province with rich resources and potentials but if the power rests on a single family name, where is the balance of power there? How can you bring in more investments if what you see is one family name? There must be a balance to everything,” he said.

He added, “I think what gives me strength is the development that we want to do for the district.”

Guico’s father, former Mayor Ramon Guico Jr. who held his post for 19 years, is making a comeback as mayor of Binalonan. (PhilStar Wire Service)
