Politics tagged in Malasiqui kagawad’s slaying
MALASIQUI—Politics is being looked into by the police as the motive behind the slaying of a newly elected barangay councilman (kagawad) in Binalay, Malasiqui, at 10:20 a.m. on May 22.
The victim, Jimmy de Luna, 51, a newly elected kagawad, sustained three gunshot wounds in different parts of his body and was declared dead on arrival at the Malasiqui Municipal Hospital.
Hit on the right leg by a stray bullet was Kagawad Ervin Chiong, who was treated at the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital (PPH) in San Carlos City.
Kagawad Lando de Luna, a relative of the victim, managed to run away when the gunmen opened fire.
P/Chief Inspector Dennis Palisoc, deputy chief of police of Malasiqui, said the victim and the other elected kagawads of Barangay Binalay had just finished a meeting at the house of Chiong.
They were conversing in front of Chiong’s house when two men riding on a motorcycle passed by them. They later returned to where they were and the back rider alighted, went behind the victim, pulled a short firearm from a bayong he was holding and shot the victim.
Palisoc told newsmen the victim was barangay chairman of Binalay from 1994 to 2001 and ran for kagawad in the last barangay and sangguniang kabataan elections.
He said Luna teamed up with a group in the last barangay election, but he was the only one in that team who won.
The police are looking into politics involving possibly some of his former teammates who resented him.
Palisoc said the relatives of the victim were not aware of anyone holding a grudge against Luna, bolstering the theory of the police that politics was the motive behind the slaying. (Leonardo Micua)
