Barangay kapitan, SK chairman are accountable

NEIGHBORS and fellow residents of our barangays have spoken. They should realize that they are only to blame or to be congratulated for making the wrong or right choices of men and women who will lead their respective communities.

But, if it’s any consolation to those who think or realize later that they elected a crook, a drug protector and a lazy bully, there is a national government today that will not hesitate to remove the curse and the bane in your community.

They can count their lucky stars that we have both a national political and police leadership that will not countenance any barangay and SK official who will use his/her position to protect drug syndicates or street pushers. The candidates whose names appeared in drug watch lists, including those who refused to take a drug test — and won — have already been warned of tokhang.

Barangay residents must know that the failure or refusal of a barangay chairman to activate the mandated Barangay Anti-Drug Advisory Council is tantamount to dereliction of duty and a reason to be charged before the Ombudsman.  A number of kapitans are already facing charges before the Ombudsman, and the DILG is set to charge more.

The war on drugs in our neighborhoods is far from over. Our families remain vulnerable and easy targets for drug syndicates. The key to the families’ protection lies with our barangay and SK officials.

Teo case

IF it is wrong, it is wrong.

That was the lesson learned in the recent Wanda Tulfo Teo case.  Teo resigned as Tourism secretary when the Commission on Audit exposed a P60-million Tourism advertising contract cornered by Teo’s brother last year.  Clearly, there was a conflict of interest as Teo is the sister of Ben Tulfo, a block timer at PTV4, the government television agency. Even as Tulfo pledged to return the money, that did not stop Teo from resigning.  President Duterte didn’t think twice in letting Teo go, proving once more that he will never tolerate corruption under his administration.  Mr. Duterte was pained by his decision as Teo’s brother, Ramon Tulfo, is one of his closest friends for the longest time.  In fairness to Ramon, a hard-hitting Inquirer columnist, he readily accepted the President’s decision.

He said, “what is wrong is wrong.”  Our salutations!
