ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

STO. TOMAS—Despite being unopposed in the barangay and sangguniang kabataan (SK) elections, all the candidates still do what other aspirants do to be elected: campaign for support for their platforms.

Councilor Anacleto Aquino, president of Liga ng Barangay here, said all candidates were given two minutes each to discuss their plans and programs once elected during a day-long forum held last May 6 at the town auditorium.

More than 700 people listened to the candidates, he said.

He said the forum was intended “to make people know that we will do everything we can for the town.”

Aquino said a convention was held prior to the filing of certificates of candidacy to determine who can and should run in the elections.

They were advised by former Dangerous Drugs Board chairman Antonio Villar Jr., who was mayor here for more than 20 years, to do house-to-house campaign to earn support for their programs.

Aquino said tarpaulins have been put up listing candidates’ names and the position they are aspiring for.

Meanwhile, Aquino said Barangay Sto. Niño has only one SK candidate and it is for the position of kagawad. There are no SK candidates for chairman and other kagawad positions.

“Almost all the youth voters in that barangay failed to register,” he said.

Meanwhile, Aquino said all the aspirants took a drug test “to sustain his status as known as drug-free.” They also signed peace covenant.

Aquino said voters here are still expected to go out and vote on May 14 despite having unopposed candidates for the ranking of kagawad.

Aquino is seeking his second term as barangay chairman of San Agustin.

The town has about 13,000 registered voters. (Eva Visperas)
