The woman at the helm in Sto. Tomas

STO. TOMAS–She is the lady to beat around here.

Making history as the province’s only lady mayor to run and win unopposed five times, Mayor Vivien Villar said she credits her victory to her performance which was anchored on “transparency, dedication and commitment in all the years of my incumbency,”

Taking her oath of office before her husband, Undersecretary Antonio Villar Jr, chief of the Presidential Anti- Smuggling Group, she said never had to make promises to win votes. “This is because I believe more on actions and actual performances than making promises,” she said.

Villar was first elected in 1992 and considers her husband and her father-in- law, the late Assemblyman Antonio Villar Sr. as “my first mentors in politics”. Villar’s husband was also mayor here for more than 20 years.

Under her administration, this town has consistently been cited as drug-free and one of the most peaceful towns in Pangasinan.

The two big projects she is implementing is the construction of a new town hall and the P100 million worth irrigation project for the town’s farmers for better and higher yield.

She said about 80 percent of the first phase of the irrigation project is now benefiting the farmers.

She cited her husband for helping her source funds from the national to provincial governments so that her town could become recipients of various projects.

She added that with the support of her new vice mayor, Timoteo ‘Dick” Villar, Jr. (whom she considers as “more than a son to me, always there for me any time to assist me”) and the Sangguniang Bayan members who also won unopposed, she is optimistic her town will remain focused on sustaining peace, progress and unity.–EVA
