THE Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Region 1 based in Calasiao, Pangasinan exceeded its collection target last year of P14.3 billion by P345 million or 2.41 percent.

This was bared to newsmen by Lee Caday of BIR Region 1 when he spoke Thursday at the KBP Forum in Dagupan City.

Caday said though it was just a modest increase, it was enough to spare the staff from being affected by the policy on attrition imposed by the agency.

In 2016, he said, the increase was more than 12 percent over the collection in 2015.

He said of the six revenue district of BIR Region 1, the Revenue District No. 4 based in Calasiao (covering Central Pangasinan) reported the highest collection at P4.41 billion, followed by Revenue District 3 in San Fernando City, La Union with P3.358 billion, Revenue District 6 in Urdaneta City covering eastern Pangasinan, P1.89 billion; Revenue District 1 in Laoag City, P1.88; Revenue District 3 in Vigan, P1.536 billion; and Revenue District 5 in Alaminos City covering Western Pangasinan, P1536 billion.

Caday attributed the modest gain in revenue collection to the effective implementation of all their plans and programs for the year and an increase in level of tax compliance by taxpayers and intensified its enforcement of tax mapping, tax compliance verification audit, continuing campaign to run after tax evaders and Oplan Kandado.

BIR Region 1 ranks second or third among the 19 revenue regions across the country in revenue collection, he said.

While the collection goal for BIR Region 1 has not yet been set in view of the TRAIN law, he assumed that the goal will be increased by 20 percent like in previous years, meaning P17 billion. (Leonardo Micua)
