Tree Library in Laoac gets support

LINGAYEN–The establishment of the first-ever Tree Library in Pangasinan will finally proceed as planned.

It will be established by the municipality of Laoac and the provincial government in a four-hectare lot along Barangay Botigue here.

The project became certain after the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) in a resolution jointly authored by Board Members Rosary Gracia Perez-Tababa, Clemente Arboleda and Liberato Villegas, authorized Gov.  Amado Espino III to sign a deed of usufruct with the municipality of Laoac over its 23,000 square meter property in Barangay Batigue as the location for the Tree Library.

The area will replace part of a 2.2-hectare property of Laoac in Barangay Batigue that was earlier reserved for the establishment of the Tree Library project but which had to give way to the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEx).

Laoac municipal government has reserved a 2.2-hectares lot in Botigue.

A Tree Library is where different species of trees will be planted to form canopy-like cover to a portion of the town and where the people can take shelter on hot summer day and relish fresher air.

But 10 years after lending a placid environment to the surrounding communities, some of the trees planted in the municipal government property were cut down to give way for the construction of TPLEx that cut across the property.

Since a Tree Library project requires from four to five hectares, Mayor Alarcio asked Espino for help in the acquisition and purchase of lots adjacent to the property of the municipality.

The SP resolution stipulated that the provincial government will only lend the land to the municipality of Laoac to be used for the reforestation program and the establishment of Tree Library of the municipality. (Leonardo Micua/Eva Visperas)
