Crop insurance summit for farmers set
FOURTH District Rep. Christopher de Venecia said a stakeholders summit is set to be held early next year among farmers and other stakeholders, including officials of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to discuss crop insurance.
De Venecia is organizing this forum because based on a study of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) that crop insurance in the Philippines is not successful since many farmers are still unaware of the program.
At the same time, he said the issue is still complex because even if the farmers know this program, the PCIC does not have enough fund to cover their insured crops.
De Venecia was interviewed by newsmen after he helped distribute rice harvester, four-wheeled tractor, hand tractor and power pumps to farmers organization in the fourth district last Oct. 17.
He said aside from intensifying information dissemination about crop insurance, there is a need also to look for funds for the PCIC to sustain the program.
Crop insurance was initially discussed in the agricultural road show hosted by De Venecia in San Fabian attended by representatives of PCIC, Department of Agriculture, Department of Science and Technology and Department of Trade and Industry last Oct. 16.
He said in view of the current climate change, crop insurance should be a must, pointing out that farmers’ crops are vulnerable to calamities like strong typhoons and floods. (Leonardo Micua)
