PESO Dagupan conducts entrepreneurship orientation
DAGUPAN CITY – The city’s Barangay Public Employment and Services Office (PESO) Focal Persons and the officers and members of the newly-formed Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) Family Circle attended a one-day capability enhancement and entrepreneurship orientation as well as free legal consultation at the city museum on October 18.
The orientation was conducted by the city’s PESO under Jocelyn Z. Siapno in collaboration with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) along with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
The free legal consultation was provided by the International Pro-Bono Alliance especially for OFWs who had been victims of maltreatment and abuse by their employers abroad.
The PESO’s focal persons in the barangays and the OFW Family Circle now serve as the city’s frontliners in giving assistance and supervision on the rights and welfare of other OFWs and their families in the barangays.
The participants were oriented on anti-illegal recruitment, the rights of OFWs and their families and entrepreneurship orientation.
From the time Mayor Belen T. Fernandez instituted the PESO and its OFW Desk, at least 97 OFWs have been either repatriated or were assisted by the city so that they can transfer to other employers abroad.
Three OFWs who were repatriated recently by the city attended the orientation and personally thanked Fernandez while another one, who is now in the custody of the Philippine Embassy in the country where she experienced maltreatment, will soon be repatriated through the financial assistance from Mayor Fernandez so that the abused OFW can come home to her family.
Those who had been repatriated recently were Maribel Landichu, Marilou Flores and Christian Gorospe. The latter is now part of the PESO in the city.
Fernandez encouraged everyone to get in touch with the barangay PESO focal persons if they intend to work abroad to ensure that they will not be victims of illegal recruiters.
“Wala tayong sinisingil or anything in return, we just would like to assure that they are in good hands when they work abroad,” said Fernandez. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
