To help women to be their best
TO raise public awareness on their existence and for the public to know that they are ready to help women to be their best, a Soroptimist International marker was built and unveiled along the De Venecia Highway.
This was underscored by Norbelita Lumague, president of Soroptimist International (SI) of Pangasinan Mariquita.
Soroptimist presidents Editha Manuel, Norbelita Lumague, Melissa Mata are joined by District Director Alicia Dumlao, during the unveiling of the Soroptimist marker.
She said, soroptimist came from a Latin word soror means sister, and optima as best, so soroptomist translates as best for women, a volunteer group and non-profit organization that is willing to help women to be their best.
Lumague said her organization is composed of professionals and women in business ready to share their time, talent and resources to help abused and abandoned women.
Among their present activities include education of abused women, who are willing and determined to finish their studies; providing career orientation seminars to high school girls; and providing livelihood training programs for women, feeding and gift-giving to young people and senior citizens.
One notable accomplishment of the chapter was the education of an abused and abandoned mother of two from Bani, who finished her Education course and is now a teacher.
Her group also visits remote areas for tree planting activities and provides free shallow tube wells to families who have problems with water supply.
The chapter is presently supervised by their District Director Alicia Dumlao, under whom are SI of Pangasinan Mariquita (named after Mariquita Castello the founder), SI of Central Pangasinan headed by Melissa Mata and SI of Eastern Pangasinan headed by Engr. Editha Manuel. (Nora Dominguez)
