Suspect in killing of cop shot dead by cops
URBIZTONDO—The suspect in the killing of a policeman in San Carlos City was shot dead in an armed encounter with lawmen about to serve arrest warrant to him on Sept. 14 along Barangay Camambugan here.
P/Chief Inspector Joshua Maximo, town police chief, said Danilo Fernandez alias ‘Papsie’, the number one most wanted person in San Carlos City, was declared dead on arrival at Blessed Family Hospital in said city where he was brought by arresting policemen.
Fernandez was wanted for murder and frustrated murder for the gun slay of Police Officer 2 Jimbo Agtarap and the wounding of his colleague, Police Officer 1 Rachael Cancino, both of San Carlos City Police Station in June.
Fernandez’s companion, Jefferson Bulatao, a drug personality in Basista, Pangasinan, was wounded in the hand and confined at Pangasinan Provincial Hospital.
The police have been conducting surveillance on Fernandez and were to implement his arrest warrant when the two were sighted on board a Hyundai Getz driven by Fernandez from Basista town. They sensed that policemen were out to arrest the prime suspect and they headed to Urbiztondo town where they were chased.
Instead of surrendering, he shot it out with joint elements of the San Carlos City and Basista Police, Provincial Public Safety Company, Special Weapons and Tactic (SWAT) team, Provincial Intelligence Branch, Pangasinan Police Provincial Office and Urbiztondo Police
Aside from the caliber .45 used by Fernandez, policemen also recovered another caliber .45 inside the suspects’ car and an undetermined weight of shabu.
Motive of the killing is yet unknown but may be related to drugs as Agtarap used to be a member of the Drug Enforcement Team of the San Carlos City Police.
Maximo said the two are believed to be members of gun-for-hire syndicate operating in Pangasinan. (Eva Visperas/Leonardo Micua)
