Dengue, not Japanese encephalitis, caused death of Sison girl
SISON—The provincial health officer said it was dengue, not Japanese encephalitis, that claimed the life of an eight-year-old girl from Barangay Asan Norte here.
Dr. Anna Ma. Teresa de Guzman issued an advisory on Thursday to Pangasinan newsmen, clarifying that, “the case of an eight-year old girl in Sison is not a case of Japanese encephalitis but it was dengue according to a joint investigation of the Department of Health (DOH) Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) and from Provincial Epidemicology and Surveillance Unit (PESU) yesterday”.
The mother of the victim said in a Bombo Radyo Dagupan interview that the doctor who attended to her daughter told them it was Japanese encephalitis that caused her daughter’s death.
De Guzman added that with the clarification, there is no confirmed case of Japanese encephalitis in Pangasinan.
She bewailed the baseless conclusions of some doctors “who are careless in diagnosing the sickness of their patients”.
While irresponsible doctors can be prosecuted, she said that prosecution takes a long process.
De Guzman stressed that no meningeal symptoms, like neck rigidity and others, were seen on the girl.
She said the DOH RESU discussed the issue with the hospital in San Fernando City, La Union where the girl was confined and reported to have died from Japanese encephalitis.
The girl died on Sept. 3. (Eva Visperas)
