Solid North given ultimatum to move its terminal
THE Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) gave Solid North bus company last Friday an ultimatum to submit its decision till September 12, whether to vacate its present terminal on Perez Boulevard or convince its two rival bus companies to allow its buses to pass through their common ingress and egress at the back.
The ultimatum was sought by Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo during a committee hearing conducted by the committee on transportation of the SP chaired by Councilor Alvin Coquia that discussed a proposed ordinance seeking to amend Ordinance No. 951-77 prohibiting the construction of a terminal whose ingress and egress is 100 meters away from a street intersection.
Councilor Tamayo noted that the terminals of Victory Liner and Five Star Bus are also within 100 meters of the intersection of Perez Boulevard, M.H. del Pilar Street and Mayombo road, like Solid North, but their present ingress and egress are way beyond the limit set forth in the ordinance.
The proposed amendment to Ordinance No. 951-77 was temporarily withdrawn by its author Councilor Nicanor Aquino to give Tamayo’s suggestion to work.
Both Victory Liner and Five Star Bus refused to allow Solid North to pass through their common ingress and egress points being their rival, prompting the latter to file a case in court against Victory Liner that owns the land converted as ingress and egress points for them.
Public Order and Safety Office chief Carlito Ocampo said only the buses of Solid North are exiting and entering their terminal through Perez Boulevard, blocking the flow traffic each time.
Tamayo said it is about time that Solid North makes up its mind, whether to leave its present terminal on Perez Boulevard or convince Victory Liner and Dagupan Bus company to allow them to use their common ingress and egress points.
He said traffic congestion continues to be a problem in the city especially during peak hours and Solid North is continuously contributing to it.
Meanwhile Councilor Luis Samson Jr. called on the barangay chairmen of Mayombo and Herrero-Perez to intercede in the conflict among the bus companies operating in their areas so that an agreement could be reached for the joint use of their ingress and egress points. (Leonardo Micua)
