FORMER Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. capsulized his life since he lost his bid for the vice presidency in 2016 with the three words: Nagmahal. Nasaktan. Nag-protesta (He loved, he was hurt, he protested).

This was how he described his life before some 4,000 graduates of the Pangasinan State University (PSU) and referred to them as his “hugot” (colloquial Tagalog for sentimental emotions) a popular item as a meme on the Internet

But he said he will continue his fight.

“I am doing this not only for myself but for the more than 14 million Filipinos who trusted me with their votes and to the countless others who were not given a voice in their ballots,” Marcos said.

The former president’s namesake won in Pangasinan in the last elections.

He advised the graduates to have their own hugot lines, which must be on positive and suggested “Nagsipag.Nagtapos. Nagtagumpay” (Diligent. Accomplished. Succeeded). 

” Dapat positibo. Pare-pareho dapat ang kapalaran nating lahat–“Nagtagumpay,” he intoned.

“Persevere and never be impatient. For impatience breeds the temptation to cut corners and commit irregularities, which might worsen into habitual and flagrant wrongdoing,” he told the graduates.

He added, “Don’t think of time as a hindrance to the goals that you have set in life. Rather, time should be on your side. Not only is time considered a great healer, as they say.”

He said sometimes one succeeds and at times one waits for success to happen.

He said he has been through a lot of tough times in his life and this phase of his electoral fight could be one of his biggest “hugots”.

“Hugot? Kasama na lahat yon, sa protest yon ang focus namin,” he later told Pangasinan reporters in an interview. “Ituloy na natin para matapos na,” he added.

“Huwag nating harangin, ituloy na natin para malaman na ng taong bayan kung ano ang tunay na nangyari noong nakaraang halalan,” Marcos said.

He said he expects his protest to be settled late this year, or early next year.

“The process is really long and as I’ve said, we are making history here because there is no precedent yet in the past,” Marcos said.

He mentioned protest cases in the past like Sen. Loren Legarda versus then Vice Pres. Noli de Castro, then Sen. Mar Roxas versus his opponent then Vice President Jejomar Binay “but these were not continued”.

“Definitely the search for the truth is always worth the sacrifice,” Marcos added. (Tita Roces)
