BJMP inmates, personnel take HIV/TB test
INMATES and personnel at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) district jail in Dagupan CIty are being given the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) tests as preventive measure in overly congested facility.
Lawyer Kenneth Bid-ing, BJMP warden here, told The PUNCH that more than a preventive measure, it also creates awareness about the prevalence of the two diseases among the inmates and the personnel.
The testing is being alternately conducted every Wednesday by the City Health Office and the Region 1 Medical Center.
“So far, of the two earlier tests, no one was found positive,” he said. The result of every test conducted may be known within the day, he added.
The third batch of testing was done on May 24 that covered about 50 clients and will continue until everyone is covered, Bid-ing said.
BJMP Dagupan now has 1,184 inmates or 900 percent congestion rate of inmates detained in their facility, supported by 56 personnel. The ideal capacity of BJMP Dagupan is 250.
He added 75 to 80 percent of their inmates face drug cases, noting that the huge number of drug cases increased due to the police’s intensified campaign on Double Barrel for illegal drugs under the Duterte administration. (Tita Roces)
