Pangasinan PESO warns vs. illegal recruiters

THE Pangasinan Overseas Filipino Welfare (OFW) Desk again reminds prospective overseas workers to seek placements only with legitimate recruitment agencies.

Chris Dioquinio of the OFW Desk said, most of the clients that they are assisting are victims of illegal recruitment.

“Many continue to be lured by false promises of high salaries, guaranteed employment and quick processing,” he said.

They also receive calls for help from workers being maltreated by their employers, particularly in Saudi Arabia.

Most of the victims of maltreatment from their employers are domestic helpers in the Middle East.

He said problems start even before the workers leave when they agree to be hired directly by employers, a policy prohibited by the government.

A legitimated recruitment agency, he said, will provide a written contract that can protect the workers since it lists the worker’s salary and benefits.

“Those who choose to go the direct hire route are taking risks since they don’t have written contracts,” he pointed out.

He advised family members of distressed OFWs to appear personally to the OFW desk to report the details about the personal information, armed with copy of the worker’s contract to facilitate the endorsement of the complaint to OWWA, DFA or POEA.

The distressed OFW can also send their complaints or problems to the Pangasinan PESO’s Facebook account (pangpeso.com ) or call to the OFW desk hotline (075-662-1130) or to the anti-illegal recruitment and anti-human trafficking hotline (0999-699-9058).

He cited the case of one OFW from Mangaldan working in Saudi Arabia who was immediately assisted when he called the hotline.

The organized Pangasinan OFW Family Association has been able to reach out to families of the distressed OFW’s and has been active in the campaign against illegal recruiters.

Over 780 Pangasinanses have been deployed by PESO since January. (Nora Dominguez)
