Various towns win SANGKA-samitan rice products contest

STA. BARBARA, Pangasinan — Native delicacies starred in the SANGKA-samitan Rice Products Contest highlighting the second day of the first Pangasinan Umaani Expo tagged as the Agew na Umaaniy Pagey held March 29 at Provincial Agricultural Nursery in Tebag East, Sta. Barbara.
The participants must come from the farmer’s and women’s associations. Each of them brought finished products with the recipe and costing.
The contest had four categories: nilatikan, suman, tupig, and binuburan. The first three products, which could be produced with any variety of malagkit, were judged according to palatability (30%), presentation (25%), stickiness (25%), and innovation (20%).
The binuburan, which should have been fermented for three days, was judged according to palatability (35%), presentation (30%), and texture (35%).
The set of judges were Rafael Salazar, school administrator of El Jardin; Virginia Cruz, retired Home Management Specialist II of Office of Provincial Agriculture (OPAG); and Rebecca Cuizon-Mamorno, owner of Rebecca’s Cassava Cake & Bakeshop.
In the Nilatikan category, Basista was hailed the champion, while San Nicolas and San Carlos bagged the second and third prizes respectively.
In the Suman category, Asingan garnered the top prize, while Tayug and Pozorrubio got the second and third.
In the Tupig category, Mangatarem was awarded the first prize, while Balungao, the second and Laoac, the third.
In the Binuburan category, Calasiao got the first prize, while Mangatarem and Sual settled for second and third.
On the same day, the agri-expo held a forum on rice technology and the potential of black rice production.
Farm mechanization was also discussed wherein a new kuliglig was given as a raffle prize for the attending associations. /Gibson T. Perez
