Police still facing blank wall

LINGAYEN–Investigators of the Lingayen police are still facing a blank wall after the dean of the College of Criminology of the Pangasinan State University (PSU) campus in Binmaley town and another person were shot and wounded by hitmen riding-in-tandem at 7:30 a.m. of March 22 along Avenida Rizal East in Poblacion, Lingayen.
P/Supt. Jackson Seguin, town police chief, the unidentified suspects clearly targeted Dean Rommel Cruz, 43, of Heroes’ Street in Barangay Poblacion, Lingayen, who was driving his Toyota Vios on his way to the PSU Binmaley campus.
The other victim, Charlene Soriano, was driving a Suzuki tricycle following Cruz’ car was hit with stray bullets when the gunman fired at Cruz indiscriminately.
Witnesses said although Cruz was obviously hit by the first volley of shots, Cruz sped off by shifting to reverse gear but the gunman chased him on foot and kept on shooting.
Cruz sustained gunshot wounds on his check, chest and abdomen.
The gunman, the back rider wearing a bull cup, was about to approach the vehicle when it stopped to continue shooting Cruz but was distracted by the commotion caused by the shooting, ran off and boarded the motorcycle that waited for him. Cruz still managed to get out of his vehicle to ask for help.
Both were rushed to the Jesus Nazarene General Hospital in Lingayen. Cruz was later transferred to the Trauma Hospital in Dagupan City where he underwent surgery to extract the bullets in his body and head.
His condition now is stable but he is under observation, Seguin said.
Seguin said they are initially looking at personal grudge as the motive behind the incident.
Both are in stable condition., Soriano remains at Jesus Nazarene General Hospital.
Cruz hit three tricycles when he backed out speeding.
Police recovered two live bullets, two cartridges from a caliber .45 pistol at the crime scene.
The violent incident was recorded by a close-circuit television (CCTV) camera of a computer rental shop in the area. The footage is being closely studied by the police in order to identify the gunman. (Leonardo Micua/Tita Roces/Nora Dominguez)
