Journalist Basa writes 30
JOURNALIST, book writer and historian Restituto C. Basa, “Resty” to his friends, was laid to rest at Eternal Gardens before noon of March 24 after a ceremony at the Methodist Church in Lucao. He was 86.
Basa, who wrote for THE PUNCH in his younger days, died March 19. He is survived by his children Sharon, Roel and Elijah. His wife Dolores passed away two years ago.
Resty, born Oct. 13, 1930 in Sta. Barbara town, wrote the book “Story of Dagupan” and Pangasinan Vignettes. He was reportedly about to finish another book when he died.
Aside from THE PUNCH, he also wrote and edited the Agno Valley News in the early 70s where he became an instant celebrity when he was slapped with the case of libel and became the first newsman in Pangasinan to be convicted, a decision of the lower court which he appealed.
He was provincial information officer of then Governor Cipriano Primicias Jr., and then Governor Vicente Millora. He was also information officer of then Dagupan City Mayor Cipriano Manaois at which time he wrote the “Story of Dagupan”.
He later joined the Regional Health Office and eventually became administrative officer of the then Teofilo Sison Memorial Medical Center which eventually became the Region 1 Medical Center.
After retiring from the government, he resumed his writing works and became a columnist of many local papers. (Leonardo Micua)
