Local enthusiasts take to new sport
BEACH VOLLEYBALL REPUBLIC EXHIBITION
WATCH out for beach volleyball to take roots in Dagupan after the exciting exhibition matches played for city residents by Beach Volleyball Republic (BVR) over the weekend.
Ten men’s and 10 women’s teams played their hearts out at the Tondaligan Beach, soon the playing field for many future beach volleyball matches. Teams were from the Pocari Sweat, Phil. Army, Phil. Air Force, Coast Guard, UST, SWU and BVR.
Dagupan City Tourism Officer Sharon Maramba said the friendly matches were part of BVR’s nationwide tour to promote beach volleyball in a bid to make the Philippines the beach volleyball capital in Asia.
With its long shoreline, Dagupan has been seen as a potential beach volleyball destination.
“They (volleyball players) want to promote tourists’ destinations. They want to promote the Philippines as Asia’s capital of beach volleyball,” Maramba told newsmen.
She added it was an opportunity for the city government to re-launch Tondaligan Beach whose renovation is underway.
Some of the players are from Cebu and Davao and the rest from universities in Manila, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard.
The women’s teams include those from Cebu’s South Western University (SWU), Pocari Sweat, Philippine Air Force, University of Sto. Tomas, BVR, Coast Guard 1 and Coast Guard 2.
Maramba said the visiting teams indicated they look forward to return soon to play against local teams. (Leonardo Micua)
