Villegas’ tarps on “Wag Kang Papatay” work, say
THERE have been less summary executions of drug suspects in Dagupan City compared to other cities in the country and the police chief was quick to credit Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas’ campaign for it.
P/Superintendent Neil Miro said Villegas’ message campaign reminding people of God’s Fifth Commandment “Hwag kang papatay” printed on giant tarpaulins in all churches and chapels in the Lingayen-Dagupan Archdiocese since August has paid off.
He noted that there has been a stop to killings of known drug suspects by motorcycle-riding men.
“Perhaps the message touched the hitmen’s conscience,” Miro said.
Since January to December 15, about 39 drug users and pushers have been killed, six of them in armed encounters with arresting police officers while 33 are considered deaths under investigation, or those perpetrated by unidentified suspects, Miro said.
And he pointed out that there has been a lull of drug-related killings in the city since November.
Since the city police launched their anti-illegal drugs campaign, 756 drug personalities have been subjected to the police’s Oplan Tokhang. (Tita Roces)
