Dagupan’s 26 barangays ‘drug-free’

FIVE more barangays in Dagupan City are expected to be declared drug-free this week raising the number of drug-cleared villages in the city to 26 out of 31 barangays.

This was bared by Superintendent Neil Miro, acting-police chief, but he withheld the list of five villages pending submission of the resolutions signed by their respective Barangay Drug Abuse Councils (BADACs) to Mayor Belen Fernandez for her certification as chair of the City Drug Abuse Coordinating Council (CADACC).

With 26 villages already cleared, Miro said only five remaining villages have yet to be be cleared to make the whole city 100 per cent drug-free.

The 21 villages earlier declared drug-free are Mamalingling, Salisay, Tebeng, Pogo Grande, Mangin, Salapingao, Barangay IV, Lomboy, Poblacion Oeste, Calmay, Caranbglaan, Malued, Bacayao Sur, Bacayao Norte, Bacayao Sur, Lasip Chico, Bonuan Binloc, Tambac and Lucao.

He added that there are still 50 drug personalities being sought in the five remaining barangays. “There were originally 2,000 at the start of the war on drugs,” Miro said.

Miro identified Barangays Bonuan Gueset, Pantal and Bonuan Boquig as the most problematic barangays because of their big population. Pantal is at the center of the city.

“Personally, I believe we can make Dagupan City 100 percent drug-free by the end of the year but we don’t have to rush because we want to make it sure that once we declare a village drug-free, the drug users and pushers will not return to their old vice,” he added.

Meanwhile, Marcelino Fernandez, president of the Federation of Barangay Councils and ex-officio city councilor, said he is happy that many barangays in Dagupan, including his own, Lucao, are now declared-drug free.

He attributed the transformation to the aggressive efforts of the city police and the barangay officials who worked hard to ensure that drug peddling and use in their communities will be stopped.

He also thanked the Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Service Point Officers and concerned residents who helped their village officials identify drug dependents, users and pushers who needed to surrender and undergo rehabilitation. (Leonardo Micua)
