NIGHTLY ANIMATED X’MAS DISPLAY

BAYAMBANG—From being a Guinness record holder for its longest barbecue, this town now aims to attract the most number of people to watch and enjoy its animated Christmas display that was unveiled on November 18.

More than 3,000 people gathered in its initial showing at the town plaza that was preceded by a Mass presided by Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, concelebrated by other priests.

At past 6:00 p.m., Mayor Cezar Quiambao, Villegas and local leaders led the ceremonial lighting of Christmas decorations in the plaza, highlighted by the start of the animated Christmas display with moving mannequins that depicted the nativity of the Child Jesus.

Lights at the front yard in the nearby St. Vincent Ferrer Parish here were simultaneously switched on as the church bells pealed that signaled the start of nightly bright glow of Christmas lights around town.

Quiambao said the animated Christmas show is similar to the former COD Department Stores’ animated Christmas display in Avenida and Cubao and in Greenhills Shopping Center in Ortigas. “But isn’t it time we have this too?” he said.

He added that he wants the people, especially the kids and the poor, to experience the joy in watching such a presentation that lasts approximately 30 minutes. It will run until January 18 next year.

The new mayor said the expected nightly influx of people to the town from other towns in Pangasinan and nearby Tarlac will surely boost business in the area.

Animation creator Albert Aguirre, who is also behind similar animated Christmas displays in Metro Manila, Puerto Princesa and other areas, said it is the first time that such a show is held in Pangasinan and the first in Northern Luzon.

The show has automated Christmas characters that move in sync with colorful lights and magical music. About P4-million was allotted for this Christmas village.

There are also 16 Belen (Nativity scene) made of indigenous materials positioned in different barangays for a competition.

A nightly Christmas bazaar is open to the town’s best produce like burong dalag, rice cakes and homegrown fish. (Tita Roces)
