SIX drug users from barangays Pantal and Lucao who surrendered were chosen as first beneficiaries of the city’s newly launched Sagip User Rehabilitation and Empowerment program (S.U.R.E.).
Mayor Belen Fernandez and P/Supt. Neil O. Miro briefed the six at the city museum on how the program works.
SURE’s focal person Erjohn Pangilinan said the participants were subjected to drug tests at Region 1 Medical Center Treatment and Rehabilitation Center to assess whether they qualify as in-patients or out-patients.
He said it is important to know what kind of treatment should be provided based on the degree of their exposure to illegal drugs.
Once they complete the physical aspect of the rehabilitation program, they will undergo values formation under the guidance of volunteers from the archdiocese and the Seventh Day Adventist, then followed by training on different livelihood programs by the City Social Welfare and Development Office.
Fernandez said the rehabilitation program is completely free, at no costs to their families.
“All that they have to do is bring themselves in and complete the rehabilitation program. We are giving them an opportunity to have a new life and a chance to live a better life,” said Fernandez. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
