SUAL—The mayor here made a strong pitch for the construction of a second power plant and an international seaport during the visit of President Duterte last

Wednesday.

An emotional Mayor Roberto Arcinue, with a cracked voice while delivering his welcome address, took the occasion to give the President a brief on the town to impress upon him the aspirations of the town’s community.

He said, since Sual hosted the 1,218 megawatts (MW) power plant operated by TeaM Energy, the biggest power plant in the Philippines, the town has since become  a first class municipality, from being fourth class in 2000.

He underscored the desire of the town to help ease the energy crisis in the country by agreeing to host a second coal plant of Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corporation, now known as Phinma Energy Corporation, whose plant will have a 900 MW capacity. With it, another 1,218 MW will be generated for the Luzon grid.

Arcinue continued to describe the long-time dream of Sual – to host an international seaport.

Leading to that vision, the municipality already managed to build a new causeway of up to six and half meters draft only notwithstanding its financial constraints but he said the plan to extend the causeway by 300 meters more to reach the canal of up to 12 meters draft to be able to accommodate big ships.

As an international seaport, he envisions Sual becoming a major tourist destination, it being scenic and historic because of its beautiful mountains and hills, overlooking the deep blue sea of Sual Bay in the Lingayen Gulf.

He recalled that during the Spanish time, Sual was a sub-port of Manila and in 1856, the Spanish government, in fact, declared Sual an international seaport.

To preserve its environment, he pointed out that one million trees will be planted in partnership with signed an agreement with San Miguel Energy Corp. and the Philippine Coconut Authority.

Last year, 100,000 trees were already planted, another 50,000 per agreement with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. (Tita Roces)
