Fish production in Region 1 down
ONLY PANGASINAN SHOWS POSITIVE GROWTH
LINGAYEN— All the provinces in the region, except Pangasinan, posted lower fish production.
Consequently, fish production in Region 1 declined by 3.7 percent in first quarter this year, according to a report from the Philippine Statistics Authority (Regional Statistical Services Office 1).
The report given during the 30th Fishery Industry Forum on Aug. 24 here said the overall output was posted at 30,310 metric tons, lower than the output in 1st quarter 2015 of about 31,480 metric tons.
In terms of provincial distribution, the province of Pangasinan shared the bulk of production of about 81.3 percent, with all its sub-sectors posting positive growth in output. But the overall positive growth in the fisheries of the province did not offset the losses of the other three provinces of the region.
The province of La Union shared 7.8 percent, Ilocos Sur had 21.3 percent, Ilocos Norte 5 percent.
Pangasinan contributed 50.5 percent of the region’s marine municipal catch with squid, skipjack, yellowfin tuna, siganid and cavalla identified as the dominant catch in the region but overall, the region posted 20.2 percent negative growth.
However, commercial fisheries volume increased by 27.4 percent from its output in first quarter of 824 metric tons to 1,049 metric tons this year contributed by La Union and Pangasinan.
In inland municipal fishery, Pangasinan ranked first in inland municipal fishery production with 40.1 percent share. The top five major catch in the region were tilapia, carp, endeavor prawn, freshwater goby and freshwater crab.
Only aquaculture production in the region registered positive growth of 0.5 per cent, and Pangasinan shared the bulk of aquaculture production with 90.3 per cent and dominated by marine cages which accounted for 53.9 per cent of the total production.
Milkfish dominated the aquaculture production. Again, Pangasinan has the bulk of milkfish production with a share of 94.8 per cent of the total production. (Tita Roces)
