President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo vowed to help the private school system when she came to open the week-long Private Schools Athletic Association national games at the Narciso Ramos Sports Center in Lingayen.

President Arroyo outlined the mechanics for the high school vouchers program to benefit private schools.

She said the high school vouchers program will entitle students in public elementary schools the opportunity to enroll in private high schools at government’s expense.

She later distributed vouchers to five public elementary schools in Pangasinan whose students will be given the chance to enroll in private schools in the province.
    
     

Each of the 250 student recipients from the five schools will receive high school vouchers valued at P4,000 each. 

The recipients of the high school vouchers program were pupils of the Dulag Elementary School of Binmaley, Cabayaoasan Elementary School in Mangatarem, Doyong Elementary School in Calasiao, Pogarua Elementary School in Burgos and Matic-Matic Elementary School in Sta. Barbara.

President Arroyo said at least P500 million had been initially allotted for the high school vouchers program, the primary beneficiaries of which will be private high schools.

The amount, she said, came from the P35 million earlier allotted by her administration for pump-priming programs in the countryside.

Meanwhile, PRISAA Region I president Dr. Gonzalo T. Duque called on politicians to stop throwing brick-bats against each other and instead focus on working collectively on programs that will benefit the youth, like sports. Duque is also president of the Dagupan-based Lyceum-Northwestern University

The President reiterated her administration’s commitment to revitalize the private school system even as the government is strengthening the public school system.
