Kapitan declares war vs illegal drugs

A BARANGAY captain in Dagupan City has decided to adopt the tact of President-elect Duterte in eliminating the worsening drug problem in his community

Bonuan Gueset barangay chairman Ricardo Mejia declared an all-out war against illegal drugs and has knocked on doors of suspected drug pushers/users in his area telling them either to shape up or ship out.

Mejia told The PUNCH Friday that after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte won the presidential race, he started meeting his constituents for an all-out war against drugs.

He said he has a covenant signed by suspected drug users and pushers in his area promising to stop in engaging in illegal drugs and to mend their wrongdoings.

Mejia’s barangay has more than 10 sitios and part of the agenda during his meetings is the strict implementation of curfew hours involving minors and other related ordinances that impose discipline and fines under the Task Force Disiplina recently created by Mayor Belen Fernandez.

In every sitio, Mejia admitted there are about 20 or more suspected drug users/pushers but he is keeping their names in confidential in keeping with his barangay’s campaign to rid it against substance abuse.

P/Supt. Christopher Abrahano confirmed earlier that the names of suspected pushers in all barangays have already been identified by the Barangay Anti-Drug Advisory Councils.

“I know them and I’ve gone through it and there’s nothing personal about this campaign, and they know .it,” Mejia said.

“They know me because I was once a plague of society myself but I have changed,” he said. He said parents in his barangay are now thankful for taking control of the situation. “No parent objected to the campaign,” he said.

He gathered his constituents anew at the barangay gymnasium last June 16, and informed them about his determination to clean and clear the barangay of illegal drugs.

Mejia said he has to do it especially that the incoming president has repeatedly announced his bold actions against those engaged in illegal drugs. (Tita Roces)
