“Be vigilant, protect the children”– MTRCB
THE Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) held a two- day forum to educate the people on the proper application of the reviews done by the agency and to promote vigilance among adult viewers in protecting children from materials not fit for children’s viewing.
Five of its board members including actress Gladys Reyes were the speakers in two separate forums, one with the KBP Forum and one with day care workers.
Atty. Jojo Salomon, board member said, MTRCB conducts forums nationwide in order to educate the people on the agency’s role and to help movie houses and other stakeholders avoid violating the rules on ratings of movie and television shows.
Salomon pointed out that MTRCB is more focused on classification of films and less on censorship.
In to regard to wrong portrayals of certain professions or certain groups in the society, MTCRB has been meeting with different groups and agencies to provide alternative dispute resolutions.
“We address (wrong portrayal issue) if there’s a complaint,” added Salomon, citing public apologies being issued as one of the main resolutions in the said matter.
Jay Revister, another board member, further explained, the board is implementing instead, the alternative dispute resolution.
The other resource speakers were Maloli Supnet and Manuel Buising,
Meanwhile, Reyes urged the parents like her to be vigilant and adhere to the ratings set by MTRCB.
“We need the help especially of the parents in explaining and imposing to the children what they are required and prohibited to watch, ” said Reyes.
The agency also conducted inspection of bus terminals in the province to check the films and shows shown on television sets at the terminals.
MTCRB encouraged the public to report violation of the Board’s rules in public exhibition areas as in buses and schools.
Present film classification ratings are the following: General Audience (G), Parental Guidance (PG), Restricted-13 (R-13), Restricted-16 (R-16), Restricted-18 (R-18), and Not for Public Exhibition (X).
Meanwhile, revised classification ratings for television programs include General Patronage (GP), Parental Guidance (PG), Strong Parental Guidance (SPG), and Disapproved for Airing on Television (X). (Johanne Macob/Hilda Austria)
