Bang, bang, Baby!

PASALO

By Virginia J. Pasalo

I DO not have a President. A lot of my friends do not have a President. For reasons already articulated and expounded ad infinitum, the choices are just not choices. For a population who wants dynasties to end, for greed to be curbed, for inclusive growth, for the reduction of poverty, to foster gender equity and equality, and so much more, there seems to be no strategy, only promises and unbelievable timelines for achieving these promises. A candidate has positioned himself as the “only choice” for our deliverance, forgetting that the Filipino has survived all self-styled messiahs, despite the blueprint of governance they have pursued, or lack of it.

I was going to put an “X” on the space provided for President, but recapitulated, I told myself, “Okay, let them unfold in the coming days, and write down a name on that ballot.” And they did unfold, and continue to unfold each day, some growing more grotesque as they open their mouths.

“Australian, American ambassadors: Shut your mouth.” I should not be surprised if a presidential candidate said this, it is in character, it is a sound bite that the public can bite. After all it is election time, and the temperament is moving towards idolatry, without rhyme or reason, no need for an explanation, he is the man. The nation is infatuated, or obsessed.

But, one man cannot order everyone to shut up. We live in the company of nations and crafted international goals and targets to make this planet a place of joy and peace. We cannot throw away our gains, especially in promoting gender equality and equity.

“The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the world’s time-bound and quantified targets for addressing extreme poverty in its many dimensions-income poverty, hunger, disease, lack of adequate shelter, and exclusion-while promoting gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability.”

We cannot jeopardize long-time allies as they defend these goals, and as they articulate their thoughts and positions regarding the matter. The Philippines is still a free country, and our right to articulate our thoughts are guaranteed in the Constitution. We cannot break ties with other nations just because we are angry, or pissed. We cannot piss on everybody.

BANG, BANG, BABY!

kiss me, kiss me

a thousand kisses

drive me, drive me, crazy

no need to buy a car baby

a room waits with a taxi, easy

shimmy-shimmy-shimmy me

tonight, honey!

election, fornication

infatuation of the nation

give me your potion

bang, bang the nation!

bang bang me to heaven, sweetie

shimmy, shimmy, shimmy me

tonight honey

bang, bang baby

oh, baby, baby, baby!
