Espinos continue to dominate races

IN a latest survey conducted by the polling firm Data Advisor last March 18-22, 2016 in all the 44 towns and three cities of Pangasinan, ABC President and Board Member Amado “Pogi” Espino III continues to lead in the gubernatorial contest polling 72 percent of those surveyed with former Congressman Marcos “Mark” Cojuangco earning 27.5 percent.

Espino is leading with big margins in all the congressional districts of the province particularly in the Second and Fourth Congressional Districts: 73.1 percent in the Second district and 77.1 percent in the Fourth district.

On the other hand, Cojuangco earned 26.5 percent in the Second district and 22.4 percent in the Fourth district.

The rest of the results are: First district 68.9 percent for Espino and 31.1 percent for Cojuangco; Third district 70.1 percent for Espino and 28.9 percent for Cojuangco; Fifth district 75.1 percent for Espino and 24 percent for Cojuangco; and Sixth 66.5 Espino and 32.2 percent Cojuangco.

In the contest for district representative in the Fifth District of Pangasinan, which is also of interest to many Pangasinense here and abroad, Gov. Amado “Espine” Espino is leading over incumbent Rep. Carmen “Kimi” Cojuangco with a score of 82 percent for Espino and 18 percent for Cojuangco, a lead of 64 percentage points.

The elder Espino is ahead in all of the towns in the district and is even well ahead in Sison considered as the bailiwick of the Cojuangcos whose family owns a big cement plant in the town. In Sison town Espino polled 83.7 percent against Cojuangco’s 16.3.

Political analyst Prof. Prospero “Popoy” de Vera of the University of the Philippines said that the single biggest factor to the good showing of the Espinos in this survey is the performance-based government of the elder Espino during his nine-year term as governor of the Province.

In the contest for Vice Governor, incumbent Jose Ferdinand “Ferdie” Calimlim of Mapandan is well ahead with 77.2 percent against Mark Roy “Mark” Macanlalay’s 19.9 percent, a margin of 57.3 percentage points.

Calimlim scored heavily in the Second and Fourth districts.

In the Third district, where both Calimlim and Macanlalay are based, the former scored 72 percent against Macanlalay’s 27.4 percent.

The survey, which was commissioned by a group of businessmen who are planning to invest in Pangasinan, were conducted by Quezon City-based Data Advisors & Polls.

It will be recalled that the same firm predicted with fair accuracy the results of the 2013 gubernatorial contest between the elder Espino and former Alaminos City Mayor Ernani Braganza.

A total of 1,503 respondents of voting age were polled for the gubernatorial and vice gubernatorial contests and 700 respondents of voting age in the Fifth district for the congressional contest.

The provincial poll was conducted on a confidence level of 98 percent with an error margin of 2.8 percent on the sampling frame application.

The contest in the Fifth district has a confidence level of 97 percent and an error margin of 3 percent also on the sampling frame. (Leonardo Micua)
