Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. lauded the women sector in Pangasinan to include the barangay service point officers (BSPOs) and barangay health workers (BHWs) for working hand-in-hand with the provincial government by rendering voluntary works to the remotest areas of the province.

Speaking before some 2,000 population officers and workers during the opening of the Provincial Population Congress held on March 16 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) gymnasium, Gov. Espino stated that the family which is the basic unit of society, is anchored on the strength of a woman.

The present administration also managed to organize two of its most active partners in volunteer works—League of Population Officers and Workers of the Philippines (LEPOWPHIL) Pangasinan Chapter and the Provincial Federation of Barangay Service Point Officers (PFBSPOs).

Furthermore, the provincial government launched the livelihood assistance program in 2008 as an effective tool in addressing unemployment or underemployment and to empower every household especially the housewives to become productive members of society.

Professing support to all volunteer workers, the provincial board has approved Provincial Resolution No. 593-2015 which caused an increase of BSPOs and BHWs amelioration from P500 to P1,000.

Meanwhile, Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Z. Calimlim, Jr. said that the event amplifies the importance of women in the society as he said that the spirit of volunteerism showed by the barangay workers manifests their motherly and sisterly love for everyone.

On the other hand, Liga ng Mga Barangay president and Board Member Amado “Pogi” I. Espino III, who inducted the newly installed officers of the LEPOWPHIL-Pangasinan chapter and PFBSPO, also commended all volunteer workers as he named them as barangay heroes.

POPCOM NCR Regional Director Lolito R. Tacardon, who represented Commission of Population Executive Director Dr. Juan Antonio Perez III, said that throughout the country, Pangasinan ranks first among all provinces in terms of total number of population and health workers (which is over 2,000) to date.

A total of 222 population and health workers were given special awards during the event for their exemplary service.

Lifetime Achievement Award was accorded to Luzviminda V. Muego, former Provincial Population Officer, who has been on active works for 33 years.

Second District Board Member Raul Sison, who chairs the committee on women, also graced the two-day congress. (Ruby R. Bernardino)
