Another “forevermore” after 7 kids and 6 apos
HONEYMOON
SAN CARLOS CITY— If you still don’t believe that there is love forevermore in this day and age, the official union of a 73-year old grandpa and his beloved sexagenarian last Thursday in the Kasalang Bayan here is proof.
Rodolfo Umangay in his formal barong, and Lourdes Aquino in her white dress, both of Barangay Tarece this city, were among the 371 couples, who exchanged “I dos” to live as husband and wife in civil rites.
Want more proof? Umangay, a farmer and Aquino, a native cake vendor, have seven children and six grandchildren!
The couple said they were very happy to have their union legalized, again, after 40 long years, though it was not the same as renewal of vows like other couples do.
Rudy and Lourdes were actually wed on June 2, 1976 at the St. Dominic Parish here and all these years, they thought their marriage was in the books until Lourdes found out last month that their wedding was not registered at the Local Civil Registry and at the Philippine Statistics Authority.
Their wedding photographs, their only proof of their official union, to family members, were destroyed by floods, she added.
She said a relative who had kept one of their wedding photos gave it to them but still, they felt it still is not enough proof that they were legally married since the picture did now show a priest solemnizing their union.
The bride said it was upon the prodding of their children that they joined the mass wedding for documents they needed in their respective jobs.
This prompted the couple to join the Kasalang Bayan program of the city government where City Mayor Julier Resuello stood as one of the mass wedding’s ninong. Former Rep. Mark Cojuangco, Calasiao Mayor Mark Roy Macanlalay, Vice Mayor Joseres Resuello and former third disrtict Rep. Rachel Arenas also stood as ninongs and the sole ninang, respectively.
The two are the oldest couple to join the mass wedding here.
After the wedding, a happy Rudy jokingly told the guests around them that he was excited as he looked forward to their honeymoon, a statement that elicited laughter from his equally amused wife. (Tita Roces)
