Natividad cooks 130-meter long cassava roll
PREPARING GUINNESS RECORD
NATIVIDAD—This sleepy, quiet town was suddenly alive and noisy on February 13 when its residents decided to prepare a 130-meter long cassava roll as the highlight of the town’s fiesta celebration.
Pablo Malla, municipal agriculture officer, told The PUNCH the town sought to establish the longest record of cassava roll in Region1.
Information posted on Cauayan, Isabela’s website (Region 2) said the town made the longest (1.250 kilometer long) cassava roll in 2005 during its Gawagaway-yan Festival
Malla said it was the first time the town did it since it was founded in 1902.
“It was just a trial. When we have enough money, we will try to make Guinness Book of Records bid,” he said.
The municipal government led by Mayor Rodrigo Rafael decided on the project to promote cassava, Natividad’s ‘One-Town-One-Product.
It received a P1.5 million fund from the Department of Trade and Industry for its Bottom-Up-Budgeting for cassava production as part of its local poverty reduction program for rural women, Malla said.
For the 130-meter long cassava roll, they used 150 kilograms of grated cassava, a sack of sugar, 26 big jars of margarine, cheese, evaporated and coconut milk and ground peanuts for the toppings.
These were simultaneously cooked in four big kawa in four large burners by some 75 persons past midnight of February 12.
There are 20 hectares of cassava plantation in the town’s four barangays, namely Calapugan, San Macario Norte, San Macario Sur and Cacandungan. About 50 farmers are involved in cassava planting of varieties like rayong 5, golden yellow and lakan 2.
The cassava roll was served after the 8:00 a.m. parade on Feb. 13 and fed the 2,600 people that participated in the parade that marked the start of the town fiesta celebration. (Tita Roces)
