Pangasinan DepEd ready for Senior-Hi
LINGAYEN— There are enough schoolrooms to accommodate all Senior High School (SHS) enrollees in Pangasinan.
This was assured by Dr. Alma Ruby Torio, the regional director of the Department of Education (DepEd), who said plan are being finalized for the implementation of the major deliverable of the K to 12 program.
“We are on the last mile… We’re trying our very best to address all concerns,” Torio said in an interview last Wednesday.
The DepEd Region 1 director said these scholrooms are located in the province’s constituent divisions namely Alaminos City, Dagupan City, San Carlos City, Urdaneta City, Pangasinan I, and Pangasinan II.
Pangasinan I, which has the highest student population among the divisions in Pangasinan, also has the most number of SHS schools, with 140 public and 49 private.
She said additional classrooms are now being constructed.
“We are also conducting inventory of available and needed equipment and tools for our technical vocational subjects,” she added.
Moreover, members of the Personnel Selection Board, in charge exclusively for the selection of SHS teachers, will undergo training next week.
She said there is no allocation as to how many teachers will be hired for the Region, but around 30,000 items are up in the entire country for the SHS.
According to the K to 12 DepEd Primer (2011), the new curriculum means “Kindergarten and the 12 years of elementary and secondary education.”
Kindergarten is the program for the five-year old children who undertake the standardized curriculum for preschoolers. Elementary education refers to six years of primary school (Grades 1-6) while secondary education means four years of junior high school (Grades 7-10). In addition to this, two years are now allotted for senior high school (Grades 11-12). (Johanne R. Macob)
