Pacquiao to end career after April 9 fight?

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

WORLD boxing reports here in the Philippines that Manny “Pacman” Paquiao’s third fight with Timothy Bradley will be his last. After all, Pacquiao himself already said win or lose, he will finally hang up his gloves for good. The congressman from Sarangani also said he will just concentrate on his political career especially now that he’s aiming for a senatorial seat.

He’s obviously so confident that he will win the senatorial race this coming national election, perhaps basing it on the latest survey that he’s now running seventh for the 12 seats at stake. But my question is, do you think he will do it? I will have to answer my own question with “yes,” but that’s if he wins the senatorial race this year, but a big “NO” if he loses. Remember, Pacman already spoke of ‘retirement’ many times before and the last time he did was his prior fight against Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In that fight, Pacquiao lost via unanimous decision with an alibi that his rotator cuff was torn before the battle (during his intensive training) and decided not to reveal it to the media and to his fans except after the clash. That prompted some fans who bet for him and lost, to sue him. But until now no verdict was given and I believe that will be solved later amicably.

The world’s only eight-division champ Pacquiao, who just celebrated his 37th birthday last December 17 now totes a record of 57 wins which 38 of them done through the short route, lost six and with two draws spanning more than 20 years, he is still capable to beat Bradley. “Kung baga sa araw siya ay nasa alas dos pa,” said my friend Rolando Esquivel. Yes, he’s right and not yet at the twilight zone, so let’s just wait and see. But as far as I can see, I think that the born-again (now) pastor in a Christian group will not quit boxing as long as he knows that he’s still physically powerful and crafty to win another world title.

Permit me to share with you a very upsetting experience at the Philippine National Bank -Mangaldan branch to forewarn its depositors. I was told icily by the new branch manager that I cannot withdraw my pension money from the U.S. government even after presenting my passbook, and can only do so by withdrawing it from PNB -A.B. Fernandez Avenue, my bank depository.

I was not allowed even after the Dagupan branch manager vouched for me as a regular and good client, owing to their new policy made effective last year. To me, this policy doesn’t make sense. This is my money and I should have the right to withdraw it in Mangaldan branch, my hometown, especially when an emergency requires it. If this is a new policy of PNB, it should have at least informed me through letter like they do when paying for my Mastercard bill. So now the bank tells me -I cannot withdraw my own money wherever I may be even in emergency situations. Perhaps it’s time for me to finally get out of PNB!
