LINGAYEN— The indigenous people (IP) in Pangasinan are in for a better deal from the provincial government.

Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. announced his administration’s plan to provide for a permanent representation for the sector in the provincial board after distributing scholarship grants to 50 students from the IP and Muslim sectors last October 26.

Mr. Espino said plans are being studied to enable IPs have a representation in the provincial board and cited the cases of the local government of Sison and San Nicolas where IPs are officially represented in the local sanggunian bodies.

In San Nicolas, an IP Day was observed last Oct. 30.

The new beneficiary-scholars from Alaminos City, San Nicolas, Sison, Bayambang, San Carlos City, Mangatarem, and Bugallon, are enrolled in different universities in the province and in Baguio City.

The grant is worth P8,000 per semester.

The new scholars join the current 30 National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) scholars and 12 Federation of Pangasinan Muslim Association (FPMA) scholars.

Noting that education remains as the “best equalizer” in life, the Espino administration, apart from the IP scholars, also supports over 2,000 academic, Pangasinan State University-enrolled, and technical vocational scholars. (Johanne Macob)
