ALAMINOS CITY— The city government of Alaminos celebrated on Tuesday, September 29, the 10th turnover anniversary of the Hundred Islands National Park (HINP) from the national government to the city.

In 2005, by virtue of then President Gloria Arroyo’s Executive Order No. 436, the administration, management, and maintenance of the HINP was transferred from the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) to the city government of Alaminos.

In his speech at the Quezon Island during the celebration, City Mayor Arthur Celeste enjoined the citizens to be more active in taking care and protecting the HINP.

He said public service resides in tourism, particularly for Alaminos City, which is known all over the globe as a tourism destination for its Hundred Islands.

The Hundred Islands was declared the first ever National Park in the Philippines on January 18, 1940 during the reign of Pres. Manuel L. Quezon.

Republic Act No. 3655 dated June 22, 1962, created the Hundred Islands Conservation and Development Authority (HICDA), for the conservation, development and management of HINP.

The HINP including Lucap Bay was transferred from HICDA to the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) by virtue of Section 35 of Presidential Decree No. 564.

Pursuant to Proclamation No. 2183 dated April 27, 1982, the HINP, including the Lucap Bay and its foreshore areas beginning from Sitio Telbang in the east to Sitio Recudo in the west, was declared as a Tourist Zone and Marine Reserve under the control and administration of the PTA.

The 10th turnover anniversary celebration was marked by a Thanksgiving Mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Amiel Christian Oineza and the blessing of the newly built facilities in the island.

Additional attractions like zipline, rappelling, wall climbing, and water sports activities namely helmet diving, snorkeling, diving, and kayaking are presently drawing more local and foreign tourists to the 100 Islands.

The Hundred Islands is now a favorite stopover destination of MS Caledonian Sky and MS Europa, and the six-star cruise ship Seabourn Sojourn. (Johanne Macob)
