Sto. Tomas to have own public market

STO. TOMAS— Finally, the only town in the province without its own public market will soon have one.

Mayor Timoteo Villar III said the construction of their public market may start this month, once the public bidding gets done.

According to Mr. Villar, the initial Php4.5 million budget for the public market project will come from the Grassroots Participatory Budgeting while another Php3 million will be sourced from the town’s Performance Challenge Fund (PCF).

The PCF is the cash incentive earned by the town for passing the standards set by the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s Seal of Good Local Governance 2015.

The 7,000-square meter public market will be put up in front of Villa Sto. Tomas in the town proper.

At present, Sto. Tomas residents buy their goods from the public markets of neighboring towns Alcala and Villasis.

“We conducted a public hearing and the various stakeholders have pledged their support to the project,” said the mayor.

Meanwhile, Sto. Tomas has been sustaining its status as the only certified illegal drug-free town in the country since 2014.

Mr. Villar said the town government regularly conducts drug-clearing operations and constant coordination with parents to maintain their peace and order.

The town also has an existing Ordinance on curfew hours for youth. (Johanne Macob)
