BILL THE FISHERMEN. The dream zero casualty in any calamity in Pangasinan will always be elusive if there are fishermen who often slip out to the sea despite warnings of high waves spawned by a coming or passing storm. Of the nine fatalities recorded by the Provincial Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) since Typhoon “Egay, then followed shortly by “Falcon,” two fishermen died and two others were reported missing and believed to have already died.

The four were with nine other fishermen from Cato, Infanta who were rescued off Laoag City by a passing ship bound for China. Luckily, the 11 other fishermen who also ignored a gale warning and still left for a fishing expedition to the West Philippine Sea, also from Infanta, were rescued by a passing U. S. Navy ship.

The rescue of these fishermen is the same story told and retold all over again and already becomes sickening. Once and for all, they should be made to be aware that whenever there is search and rescue operation for them, the government spends money and precious man hours. The costs, gentlemen, are more than the cost of fishes that these fishermen hope to catch in their expedition.

Perhaps to stop them from venturing out recklessly and expect to be recued, government should set a policy that the costs for rescuing them in the sea will be charged to them. That should stop them from needlessly venturing out to the sea after being warned. – Leonardo Micua

BAD HABIT, BAD CONDUCT. Besides having absentee board members who don’t participate in the task of legislating local laws, there’s one notable (mis)conduct of one that is being tolerated by his colleagues.

It is bad enough that he does NOT have a perfect attendance record, and neither is he among those gifted with the brilliance of a lawmaker, but our honorable official always slips out after attendance is checked by the secretary to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, and never returns even shortly before the session is adjourned.

Singa si David Copperfield, the world’s greatest magician, mansikmat, nabalang, aga nanengneng ya bigla si bokal.

It’s becoming a very bad habit that needs to be stopped. Pangasinenses are being gypped. Obviously, it’s being tolerated because of the guy’s status, connections and influence.

GREED AND PYRAMIDING SCAM–Another pyramiding scam company had victimized many although the victims are themselves to be blamed. National television networks have been exposing this scheme while government agencies like Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Security and Exchange Commissions (SEC) have been alerting the public against such companies but people are just not listening.

Many are lured to the idea that they can earn a too-good-to-be-true income by just investing a large sum of their hard-earned money without exerting effort. And scam operators exploit the natural greed of men as an opportunity to swindle anyone. To think that it was only several years ago when a similar scheme was exposed, and now this again.

I hope and pray that the public will not forget about this scam too soon. It is laudable for PESO Pangasinan to take the initiative to inform the public on how to distinguish a legitimate networking company from scams but this should have been done earlier considering that pyramiding scam is not a new business. – Hilda Austria
