WATCH the movie “San Andreas” and learn from it.

This was the tact employed by Dagupan City Mayor Belen T. Fernandez when she decided to convene the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council to assess the preparedness of the city to respond to emergency situations including flooding during the rainy days and the likely occurrence of other calamities like flood, earthquake, tsunami and fire.

To give them an idea of the level of readiness needed, the mayor brought the members of the council to the movie theater at CSI the City Mall to watch the screening of the movie “San Andreas.”

After the film showing, Ms. Fernandez asked the council to assess and review the city’s capability and ability to deal with and respond to any calamity especially in the implementation of mitigating measures to avoid or to lessen the destruction of lives and properties with P/Supt. Christopher Abrahano, police chief, and F/Inspector Romie Tungpalan, acting city fire marshal, in attendance.

The review included the assessment of the provision of a set of family disaster preparedness brochures on 72-hour emergency kit that also contain important information and instruction to guide families on what to do during tsunami, earthquake, flood and typhoon, to each household in the city in all the 31 barangays.

Also discussed was the status of the swimming program for some 6,000 children and the need to extend the program to schoolteachers and city hall volunteers who do not know how to swim.

The discussion on the mobility and capability of the engineering department and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to perform rescue operations agreed on the purchase of one mini 6×6 truck.

The CDRRMC has been tasked to organize the barangays into clusters and to identify a place for each cluster where residents can proceed for shelter or evacuation.

The mayor said an intensive information campaign using the services of the tri-media will be launched to educate residents on proper responses to calamities.

Regular drills on all disasters in partnership with the Department of Education and the Parents Teachers Associations will also be done in all schools in the city. (CIO)
