We have big plans for agriculture – Mark C.

COJUANGCO UPDATE

FORMER Pangasinan Fifth District Rep. Mak Cojuangco urged farmers to aspire for better yield and better income by also exploring other high-value crops, aside from their traditional palay produce.

At a recent meeting with farmers at the Kita sa Barangay Foundation Training Center in Bayambang for the distribution of certified seeds by the Pangasinan Research & Experiment Center (PREC) for the wet season rice subsidy, Cojuangco explained how other high value crops that need less water can provide them higher yield.

Cojuangco was joined by Calasiao Mayor Mark Roy Macanlalay, Engr. Rosendo So of Abono party-list and the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura and Bayambang officials led by Vice Mayor Mylvin Junio and other agriculture officials.

Cojuangco said Bayambang has a big chance of increasing farmers’ income with its vast land area and variety of crops to be planted.

He said he and Macanlalay, his known tandem for the 2016 gubernatorial and vice gubernatorial posts, have great vision and programs for agriculture in Pangasinan.

Cojuangco said the fifth district where he served for three successive terms has good track record in farming.

He said under his stewardship, he used the share of his district from excise tax for the purchase of farm tractors, irrigation systems and major post harvest facilities.

He also cited as an example the drying facilities in Villasis and Alcala towns that are capable of drying 400 tons of palay daily in the 4,000 hectares of agricultural land.

The availability of the drying facilities, he said resulted in more income for the farmers because wastage that results from solar drying on the highway is greatly minimized. It also made them production efficient, he added.

“If we were able to do it in Villasis (which has been operational in recent years), why not in other towns?” he said.
