BFAR lauds Dagupan’s bangus branding
LINGAYEN — The branding of Dagupan bangus launched by Dagupan City has impressed the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
“I am happy to know that there is already bangus branding in Dagupan City to easily distinguish its own product in the market,” said BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden.
“We hope other places in the Philippines will do the same” Domenden told newsmen during the First National Fishery Producers’ Summit held here last week.
According to the BFAR director, the branding of Dagupan bangus is consistent with a standing resolution of the Regional Development Council (RDC) seeking the labeling of all OTOP (One Town One Product) products in the region.
Meanwhile, Dagupan City Agriculturist Emma Molina confirmed the city government has yet to register the system with the National Patent Office (NPO).
It was the BFAR regional office that recommended the concept to the Dagupan City government and Domenden said his office is ready to assist in improving the system if requested.
He said the branding is important to protect and guarantee consumers that they are getting the value for the money they pay for and prevent other suppliers from misrepresenting their produce.
Domenden expects the Dagupan bangus would not only be in short supply soon because consumers would be looking for milkfish that carries the tag “Dagupan certified,” but the price of Dagupan bangus will expectedly go higher.
He advised the city government to closely monitor the prices to ensure that Dagupan bangus does not price itself out that could lead to a sudden slump in the demand. (Leonardo Micua)
